Kindred Spirits

When you're in college you meet a lot of people. Half the time you can barely remember their name, let alone their face or their major. The names and faces begin to blur together and soon you start to mix them up and it makes for very embarrassing, nubby situations. Every once in a while though, you will meet a Kindred Spirit. Kindred Spirits come in many ways, shapes and forms. They are also found in the unlikeliest of places.

For example, earlier in the semester I was getting breakfast in the Cannon Center and I happened to sit with a girl who was sitting by herself. I can't for the life of me remember her name, but I do remember the feeling I had when I was talking to her and she was most definitely a Kindred Spirit. I've seen her a few times since that conversation but I haven't talked to her since. I really wish I could remember her name because I have a feeling we could become really good friends if we got to know each other better. I've actually met a couple Kindred Spirits in the Cannon Center. Who knew?

Kindred Spirits, for those of you who don't know, are people who have certain qualities that make them likeable, easy to click with or just plain interesting. There is just something about them that attracts you. (In both romantic and non-romantic ways). It's someone who you feel like you could share anything with, even if you've just met them. It's hard to give a complete description because the "Kindred Spiritness" differs from person to person even though they're all Kindred Spirits. People can be Kindred Spirits even if you haven't met them yet. For example, there are a few celebrities that I feel would be Kindred Spirits if I ever met them. Celebrities such as Emma Watson, Taylor Swift, Ingrid Michaelson and Zooey Deschanel just have something that the other ones don't. I don't know. Maybe I'm just crazy. I hope not. Sometimes you know someone for a long time before actually discovering that they're a Kindred Spirits. People have layers. Just like Ogres. But I digress.

I've actually met quite a few Kindred Spirits up here at BYU and they've all been wonderful discoveries. I'm so grateful for their friendship, as well as for the Kindred Spirits I already knew before I came here and the ones that I've discovered along the way. Anne Shirley sums it up much better than I can: "Kindred Spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world."

Love, Brontë
