Becoming a World Traveller: A Day at the Bay

Did you know....?

Cardiff Bay is one of my favorite places in the whole city. I guess it used to be a really crummy and dangerous part of town, but now it is absolutely beautiful! They have all sorts of cool things going on there, BBC Wales (where they film Sherlock and Doctor Who) is there, as well as the Welsh Assembly Building, the Welsh Opera House, the Doctor Who Experience, and several other really cool buildings and things to see. If you ever find yourself in Cardiff, the Bay is one place you do not want to miss.

We got to take a tour of the Welsh Assembly and it was really cool! Usually political things tend to bore me, but Gareth our tour guide was so excited about everything that I couldn't help getting excited, and I don't know anything about Welsh politics at all.

Their building is really beautiful and incredibly eco-friendly, and it was cool to see how they run their government in conjunction with Parliament. Gareth told us all about how they have different representatives and committees that are in charge of different things. My favorite committee that he told us about was the committee that's in charge of petitions. Fun Fact: You only need 10 signatures on a petition for it to be reviewed by the committee! How cool is that? I think it takes something like 100,000+ signatures for a petition to even be looked at by the US Congress.

After we toured the Assembly we just got to wander around the Bay for a little bit. Mandee and I found this cute little flea market and had a lot of fun just wandering around and exploring. BUT of course this day wouldn't be complete without a slight disaster, so here we go:

Remember how I broke my shoe in Hay-on-Wye? And then fixed it with super glue? Well, right before we went to tour the Welsh Assembly I tripped and broke it again, because apparently even super glue can't fix everything (I know, my world shattered a little bit too) but I did have the super glue in my bag with me so I hurriedly attempted to fix it again, while trying not to get left behind. Result? Foot super glued to shoe. But by this time everyone else in my group was headed inside the Assembly building so I didn't have time to fix it or anything, and my shoe WAS staying on so I just left it. Throughout the tour it slowly peeled off, and by the time we got out it was completely free. However, we still had about an hour before we were going home and I couldn't just walk around with a broken shoe, so I ended up super gluing my foot to my shoe again. On purpose. Mock me if you want, but I call it creative problem solving. When you're disaster prone like me, you have to be prepared to improvise.

Super glue works wonders.

The saddest part of this story is that I had to throw away my sandals, which were kind of a wardrobe staple. Luckily there's a beautiful (and cheap) store called Primark here, and I was able to get new sandals for 8 pounds. Small and tender mercies.

More adventures to come!

Love, Brontë
